Development and Evaluation of the group counseling for school-adjustment: targeting school-unadjusted adolescents

|
The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of the group counseling for school -unadjusted adolescents who have some risks of school drop-out or delinquent adolescents. This program was focused on enhancement of self-esteem and decreasement of depression and anger. The subjects were recruited from the middle school students who were refered to counseling for school-unadjustment problems. They were screened by school teachers by using school-unadjustment rating scale and then they were divided into experimental and control groups. The total number of sessions consisted of 10 sessions during the 5 week period, each session lasted for 90 minutes. The self-esteem scale, depression scale, anger scale, school-unadjustment scale, teacher¡¯s evaluation of adolescent¡¯s problematic behavior scale were used. The results showed that at post-tset, the subjects who participated in counseling group reported significant improvements on school-unadjustment, self-esteem, anger scales which were self-rating and frequency of problem behaviors and student¡¯s attitudes at school-life which were teacher-rating, while control group didn¡¯t report significant improvements. At 3 week follow-up, the effects of experiment group lasted on school-unadjustment, anger scales and student¡¯s attitudes at school-life. The differences between experiment and control group were found at post test on school-unadjustment, self-esteem, anger scales and student¡¯s attitudes at school-life. However, the differences between two groups were decreased at 3 week follow-up test. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
